The Book Table {A Before & After}

It's not often that I buck the "Furniture Nazi"
but this time, I think I'm gonna have to do it.

I love this table.

When we picked up this little sofa table at an auction in May, I didn't have much hope for it being anything other than what it was...

A totally dated, 1980s
countrified lookin' table.

Not that being countrified is a bad thing.

I'm a whole lot country.

But this was, like, country in the 80s...

Like Billy Ray Cyrus...

And mullets.

Yeah.

No.

The only thing it had going for it was the glass top
that came with it and the fact that it was solid wood.

Like most projects that I do,
I started out thinking, "Old White".

Well, when I got the first coat of on, I looked at it and went...

"Meh."

So, then I mixed the Old White with Graphite on the base,
not caring if I was a little darker or lighter, here and there.

As I've learned, it gives the piece a little bit more depth.

Even after applying the Graphite mix,
I still wasn't over the moon for it.

Better, but not there yet.

So, I stared at it a while and couldn't come up with a solution, so
I walked away from it to work on something else
for a couple of hours.

When I came back to it,
I thought about writing a poem on it,
in black sharpie.

I even went so far as to print out
a Robert Frost poem.

After chalking the first few lines, I wasn't confident enough in my ability to write on such a large piece and keep the lines straight,
so I scratched that idea.

Well, that and I'm lazy.

;)

It was about that time that an old German book caught my eye.

Hmmmm....

Yes, I think so...

With the glass top, it's awesome!

And what's funny is, I had such a hard time with the Mod-Podge and getting the air bubbles out (my driver's license will never be the same), I thought for sure I was going to have to scrape all of it off and re-do it.

But lo and behold, when I went out there Sunday morning
to check on it, it looked fantastic!

I think the Lord answered my prayer on this one.

You know the prayer that goes,
"Oh, Lord!  Please don't let me have to re-do this entire table!"

LOL!!

And I might just keep it.

That is, IF the "Furniture Nazi" lets me.

LOL!

Have a blessed day, y'all!

  1. Perfect! Don't you just love it when a creative idea(experiment)turns out to be the perfect solution. This would be hard to let go, I think I would have to keep it myself.

  8. I wouldn't have thought of doing this. I love the look of the top where the pages are kind of scattered on top of each other.
