Salt Dough Stars {Tutorial}

I'm sure like most Americans,
and maybe some of you in other countries,
Christmas this year is about
being a little more "creative"
in my decorating due to things being
a little "tight" financially.

If it can be re-used....

Re-use it.

If it can be painted...

Paint it.

If it can be made...

Make it.

So, that's what I've done this year.

Reduce.

Reuse.

Recycle.

And I can't really say I'm an environmentalist.

I've just found my new frugal side, out of necessity.

;)

For pennies on the dollar,
you can make these way cute and super versatile
Salt Dough ornaments.

What you need...

2 Cups Flour

1 Cup Warm Water

1 Cup Salt

Directions...

1)  Mix it up.

2) Roll it out.

(1/8th inch thickness or so,
depending upon how thick you want them.
I wanted mine pretty thick.)

3)  Cut it up.

4)  Poke a hole in it to hang it...

or a lot of little holes to decorate it.

5)  Bake it.

200 degrees for a couple of hours or until completely dry.

Or if you don't want them to puff up,
let them air dry for up to three days.

6)  Paint it.

Acrylic, Chalk Paint...

Whatever you've got.

You could even dye it with food coloring.

7)  Sprinkle a little glitter on it because you know,
glitter makes everything better.

;)

8)  Use them where ever you'd like...

Your mantle garland...

Fake cookies...

On your tree...

Or to embellish your homemade stockings.

Which brings me to tomorrow's post:

No Sew Christmas Stockings.

Yes, it can be done.

;)

Until then...

Dream Big,

  1. Laura, we used to make these all the time when we were kids. But we would paint them when they were dry. It brings back such good memories!
What a fun thing to do with the kids.
